Porn mass – Music that Caused a Scandal
by Märta Myrstener for Sveriges Radio, 10 May 2024
This documentary-podcast recounts the controversy surrounding the world premiere of Sandström’s Requiem: De Ur Alla Minnen Fallna, an emotionally charged work centring on the deaths of children during the Second World War, with libretto by Tobias Berggren. Berggren’s text powerfully illustrates the loss of innocence in the wake of war, using pornographic references, quotations of children’s songs, and Christian themes. The premiere was met by calls for its cancellation by parents of children in the choir, members of the orchestra, and politicians. It even led to a bomb threat at the Berwaldhallen, Stockholm.
